「Xの予防にA剤はB剤よりも優れているかどうか明らかにするために、比較実験を実施した。」という一文を英訳するなら、

A controlled study was conducted to determine whether drug A is superior to drug B in preventing X.

よりも、

A controlled study was conducted in order to determine whether drug A is superior to drug B in terms of preventing X.

の方がやや好適かつ明瞭です。この一文は、シンプルでありながら、「in terms of」という表現の有用性を示す好例です。

「対策スペース: ユニット置き換えにて対応可能」に相当する英語表現は、

Space for countermeasure: can be accommodated by replacing unit

よりも、

and space-wise it is possible to cope simply by replacing the unit

の方が好ましいでしょう。

接尾辞「-wise」は、範囲や観点を特定した上で見解を表明する場合の翻訳時に有効です。例えば、「clockwise」、「weather-wise」、「cost-wise」のように使い、「clockwise」など、定着している語はハイフン不要で辞書にもそのままの形で載っています。ただし、「weather-wise it was a very pleasant resort (天候的に行楽地はとても快適だった)」や「cost-wise it was a very reasonable offer (価格的にかなり手頃であった)」、あるいは「safety-wise it was the best solution (安全面で最善の解決策であった)」など、wiseを付加して副詞(句)を作る場合には、ハイフンが特に重要です。また、上記の例はすべて、「-wise」の代わりに「in terms of」を使うこともできます。先述の「space-wise」ならば、「in terms of space」となります。

「対策スペース: 大きなフィルター機器が必要」に相当する英語表現は、

よりも、

Space-wise a large filter device is required

の方が好適かつ英語としてはるかに自然です。日本では、技術文書の作成時にコロンなどで区切った表現をよく使いますが、英語ではそのような表現が原則として望ましくなく、文章で滑らかに書き表すことを重視します。

「仮に間接方式が承認されたとしても、日程的にXに間に合わない可能性があります。」という一文を英訳するなら、

Even if by any chance an indirect monitoring method were to be approved, there is nonetheless a real possibility that time-wise we would not be in time for X.

が適切です。

同様に、「タイミング的には今非常にまずいです(別の話題で集中しているため、たぶん聞くことができないという意味です)。」という一文も、

Time-wise the present moment is far from being satisfactory; what I actually mean is that I can completel tied up with another issue and I will probably not be in a position to make the necessary enquiries).

と訳すのが適切です。
