354. 「varying」と「variety」、「different」と「異なる」
「異なる」の英訳には、注意が必要です。英語の「different」は、2つの事柄や状態の区別に使い、厳密には、3つ以上の事柄が関わる場合には使いません。「異なるタイミングで」という一節を英訳する場合、関わる事柄が2つなら「at different times」、3つ以上であれば「at varying times」が適切でしょう。セクション360で取り上げる「変化する」などの類似表現についても、等しく注意が必要です。
「多様性に対応する」という一節を英訳するなら、「address a variety」ではなく、「cope with variations」が適切です。この例は、日本人翻訳者が必ずしも理解しているとは限らない「variety」と「variation」という2つの単語の意味の違いを明確に表しています。「variety」は、特徴や特質によって区別した同じ分類のものの数に重点が置かれ、「variation」は、状態、量、程度などにおける変化および微妙な差異に重点が置かれています。したがって、「多様性」の場合には、「variety」ではなく「variation」が正解です。
「異なる分解度を持つデータ」に相当する英語表現は、
data having a different resolution
ではなく、
data having varying degrees of resolution
です。
「また、電子軌道や電場シミュレーションの計算手法が異なれば、同じ装置であっても、電子の反射回数やエネルギーの計算値に差が生じることは明らかである。」という一文を英訳するなら、

よりも、

「現場の使用環境に対応して、各制御方式を使い分ける」という一節を英訳するなら、
change the control method of the product according to actual use environment
よりも、
vary the method of controlling the product in accordance with the environment in which it is actually being used
の方がはるかに好ましいでしょう。
「推移」などの単純な語でも、「change」と英訳しないで、「variations」と英訳した方が良いでしょう。「売上及び経常利益の推移」ならば、
transition of sales and current profits
ではなく、
variations in sales and current profits
と訳すのが適切です。グラフのタイトルならば、
Trends in sales and current profits
が良いでしょう。
