353. 「equivalent」、「相当」、「準じた」

「～相当の金額」に対しては、「equal」を使うのではなく、

sum of money equivalent to …

と訳すのが適切です。「equivalent」は、文字通り「of equal worth (等価の)」を意味し、日本人翻訳者がなかなか上手く使いこなせない重要な単語です。「equivalent」の用例については、セクション499でも取り上げています。

「国家検定に準じた社内検定制度」に相当する英語表現は、

an internal corporate examination system that is deemed to be of a standard equivalent to the national examination

が適切です。

「環境負荷物質は、環境負荷物質の管理規定 (STS Z001G) またはそれに相当する納入先基準もしくは事業部規定を満足すること。」に相当する英語表現は、

Environmentally hazardous substances should conform to the Standards for Control of Environmentally Hazardous Substances (STS Z001G), or to equivalent customer or Operation Division standards.

です。

「Xの長さ分だけ長くなっている」という一節を英訳するなら、

longer by a length of X

よりも、

longer by a difference equivalent to a length of X

の方が適切です。

「温度上昇をXの1/3程度の小さい値とすることができた」という一節を英訳するなら、

it was possible to reduce the increase in temperature to a small value corresponding to about 1/3 of X

よりも、

it proved possible to reduce the increase in temperature to a smaller value, equivalent to about one third of that in the case of X

の方が適切です。
