269. 「individual」、「each and every」、「各自」

「各ノズルごとに」に相当する英語表現は、「for each nozzle」よりも、「in individual nozzles」の方が適切な場合が多いでしょう。「individual」は、日本人翻訳者がなかなか上手く使いこなせない英単語です。

「各車輪速度から推定横加速度を算出する」という一節なら、

an estimated lateral acceleration is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds of each wheel

よりも、

the estimated lateral acceleration is calculated on the basis of the speeds of individual wheels

と訳した方が好ましいでしょう。「each」は、集団の全構成要素について言及する場合に使用され、読み手に集団の構成要素1つ1つを連想させる表現です。車輪の数が明らかな場合には、「is calculated on the basis of the speeds of each of the wheels」とするのが適切ですが、正確な構成要素数が定かでない場合には、「each」よりも広い意味を持つ「individual」を用いるのが適切です。「wheel speeds of each wheel」は、「同語反復(1)」やセクション261で取り上げた同語反復に当たります。

「社員ひとりひとりが夢と誇りを持って働ける企業風土」に相当する英語表現は、

a corporate environment in which each individual employee can work with pride, and retain aspirations for the future

です。英語では、「夢 (aspirations)」と「誇り (pride)」とを分けることが重要です。和文の「持つ」をそのまま動詞として使用して、「aspirations and pride」などとひとまとめにしてはいけません。

「ひとりひとりが個性かつ責任ある行動をとるための基準として『ABCグループ行動基準』を策定しました。」という一文であれば、

We prepared a Code of Standards that is designed to ensure that every single individual concerned acts in a manner that is fair and responsible.

と訳すのが良いでしょう。

「17日の夕食は各自でおとりください。」

この例における「各自で」は、英語圏の人に理解してもらうには、直訳するのではなく、何らかの説明を補う必要がある表現の1つです。翻訳案を挙げるなら、

No special function has been arranged, and you should all take dinner at a time of your own convenience.

といったところでしょう。冗長とも思える翻訳ですが、原文に潜在する真意は、他の日とは違って17日には、その団体のために特別な夕食は用意されないということです。また、この例文は、英語の「individual」の使用にも注意が必要です。和文が過剰に省略されていますが、本来の意味は、「each of you make up your minds individually」であり、「dine individually」ではありません。

「全員参加の下、世界に誇れる製造ラインをつくりあげる」という一節を丁寧に英訳するなら、

create, thanks to the active participation of every individual employee, a production line in which we can all take pride, wherever in the world we travel

が適切です。この一節は、簡潔であるもののなんとなく曖昧な和文を英語で十分に理解してもらうには、丁寧に詳述する必要があるということを示す一例です。

「社員ひとりひとりへの環境保全の意識づけを行います。」という一文を英訳するなら、

Activities are being undertaken that are designed to raise the level of awareness of each and every employee concerning the protection of the environment.

が適切です。「each and every」という表現を使うのが重要です。
