266. 「適切」、「適正」、「適時」、「appropriate」、「proper」

「適時改正」という表現を英訳するなら、「occasionally」を使うのではなく、「amend as and when appropriate」が適切です。

「適切に設定する」という一節の英訳としては、「set properly」よりも、「set at an appropriate level」の方が正確です。「set properly」だと、結果ではなく、設定行為自体を規定してしまいます。この例で、「適切に」という曖昧な表現が強調しているのは、手段ではなく目的の方でしょう。このシンプルな一節は、不適切な翻訳を招いてしまいがちな曖昧な日本語表現の好例とも言えるでしょう。

「積層方法は、A、Bなど、適宜の方法を用いて行うことができる。」という一文の適訳は、

As a method for laminating (these plates) an appropriate (「proper」ではない) method such as A or B may be employed.

です。

「汚水はZで適正処理後」なら、

よりも、

と訳した方が適切です。

「記載された情報が理解容易であるためには、できる限り簡素な表現が求められますが、内容が複雑であっても必要な情報は適切に提供される必要があります。」という一文に対する適切な英訳は、

Although it is of course important that expressions contained in the document be as simple as possible, and accordingly easy to understand, even in circumstances where the contents of documents are complicated, it is nonetheless essential that all the relevant information (あるいは「all the information required」) be supplied to a satisfactory extent (あるいは「to an acceptable degree」).

です。この一文は、「適切に」を常に「appropriately」と単純に訳すのではなく、和文の根底的な意味合いを掘り下げて考えることが重要であることを示す好例です。

「適切な治療にもかかわらず、うつ病が再発した。」という一文を英訳するなら、

Depression relapsed in spite of an appropriate treatment.

よりも、

The patient relapsed back into a state of depression, in spite of what had been regarded as appropriate treatment.

の方が妥当性が高いでしょう。英語では論理的な問題が絡んできますので、「what had been regarded as」などのフレーズが不可欠です。このフレーズがないと、再発したのにその治療は本当に適切だったのだろうか、と英語圏の人は疑問を抱くでしょう。この例は、英語圏で「loose terminology (曖昧な用語)」とみなされる言い回しに対して日本人は許容度が高いということをよく表しています。
