264. 「共通」と「共用化」

「共用部品」に相当する英語表現としては、「common parts」が妥当です。

「日本とヨーロッパにおける部品の共用化」という一節なら、

use common parts for Japan and Europe

または

use in both Japan and Europe parts that are identical

と訳せば良いでしょう。タイトルが「共通」という場合には、単に「common」と訳すより、実際に意味するところを詳述して、例えば、「a common objective for all parties involved」などと訳す方が好ましいでしょう。

 

「上記製品は代表であり、共通事項は次である。」という一文の英訳としては、

The above product is representative and general matters include the following.

よりも、

The above product is representative and common features are as set out below.

の方が適切です。

 

2者について言及する文脈における「よって、機能上の共通点はありません」という一節を英訳するなら、

thus they do not have in common in terms of functions

よりも、

and in terms of functions the two have nothing in common

の方がはるかに正確です。「have in common」というだけでは文法的な体裁を成しておらず、「have something in common」と表現するのが通例です。したがって、この例では「have nothing in common」と表現するのが適切です。
