260. 「余り」、「余暇」、「residual」、「remaining」、「extra」

「インク余り予測量」に相当する英語表現は、

extra ink predicted amount

ではなく、

predicted amount of residual ink

または

predicted amount of ink remaining

です。「extra」が、「ある数量に追加されるもの」であるのに対し、「residual」は、「ある量の大半が消失した、あるいは除去された後にまだ残っているもの」を意味します。数学用語を使って簡単に表現すると、「extra」は「プラスアルファ」、「residual」は「マイナスアルファ」と言えます。したがって、「extra」は「余り」という意味ではありません。

「Zで覆われた箇所を除いた枠体の上面の残りの部分には」という一節を英訳するなら、

in a remaining portion of the top face of the frame body excluding the portion covered by Z

よりも、

in a residual portion of the top face of the frame body, a portion that excludes the portion covered by Z

の方が適切です。「residual」は、冒頭の例と同様、この例においても、「大半の消失、あるいは除去後に残っているもの」を意味します。しかし、「remaining」は、過去との関連で用いられる場合、「他の部分の完了後、あるいは使用後に残されたもの」という意味合いとなり、「residual」とはやや異なります。

「extra」の誤訳例をもう1つ挙げておきます。

「お客様に余暇がある場合」は、

if the customer has extra time

ではなく、

if the customer has any spare time

と訳すのが適切です。
