200. 日本語の接尾辞「～化」の訳し方
「国際化」および「グローバル化」に相当する英語表現としては、「internationalization」および「globalization」が適切です。
ただし、「自動車メーカーのグループ化の動き」という表現のように、接尾辞「～化」を安易に「-zation」とは訳せない場合もありますので、「～化」と結合している名詞を踏まえて、さまざまな訳を検討する必要があります。ちなみにこの一節は、
the propensity for automobile manufacturers to form groupings
または
moves among automobile manufacturers to form groupings
と訳すのが妥当です。
同様に、「10年前から世界規模での自動車メーカーのグループ化の動きがあり、戦略的合併や資本提携など急速にグループ化が進みました。」という一文であれば、
Ten years earlier a trend for automobile manufacturers to form groupings had emerged on a global scale, and new groupings were rapidly formed in the shape of strategic mergers, capital affiliations and similar kinds of arrangements.
と訳すのが適切でしょう。この例文の場合、自然な英訳となるポイントは、「など」に対して「in the shape of」を使用したことです。
「小型化」の訳語としては、「miniaturization」がおそらくベストでしょう。「-ization」は、「～化」の意味を伝えるのに最適であることの多い表現です。
ただし、「小型化に向く」という場合には、
progress is being made towards miniaturizing
と訳すのが妥当です。
一般論ですが、翻訳者であれば、日本語でその概念をどう表現するか、細かい点まで自問し、その結果に基づいて英訳することが最善の取り組み方でしょう。「-ization」を付加した語を使用する場合には、その語が英語圏で実際に使われているか、少なくとも確認するべきです。
「欧州や米国においても現地化が定着した。」という一文を英訳するなら、
In both Europe and the United States of America, the practice whereby Japanese companies had begun to localize their operations took firm root.
が良いでしょう。
「太陽電池、燃料電池などの研究開発が進み、実用化が始まった。」という一文なら、
Progress has been achieved in research and development into areas such as solar cells and fuel cells, and practical applications of such technologies have also already been initiated.
と訳すのが適切です。この一文は、「-ization」を用いるのが不適切であり、「実用化」の意味合いを伝えるのに「practical applications」を用いるのが最適であることを示す好例です。
同様に、「Z社はさらなる要素技術を付加しながら、実用化に向けた取り組みを進めている。」という文の場合も、同じ表現を使って
Z-Company has sought to bring new factors into the equation and is currently taking further steps in the direction of practical applications.
と訳すのが適切でしょう。
「事業化に向けて活動へと進展している。」という一文であれば、
Steps are now being taken to proceed with commercial applications.
と訳すのが適切です。
「世界各国で愛されている商品ですが、製品化が非常に困難になってしまいます。」という一文を英訳するなら、
These products are popular all over the world but, (if these regulations were to be imposed), it would become extremely difficult to put such products onto the market.
が良く、もう少し字面に忠実に英訳しようとすれば、
…, it would become extremely difficult to manufacture these items on a commercial basis.
でしょう。「製品化」の意味はやや曖昧であるものの、もし規制案が導入されるとなると、その製品の製造はともかく、販売ができなくなるであろうという、日本の業界団体の代表の意図は明確です。この一文は、日本語表現に特有の曖昧さ故に、翻訳者が、筆者の意図をある程度まで解釈する負担を強いられるため、完全に正確に訳すことは不可能です。
「国境や業種、男女の役割などのボーダーレス化」
という表現は、極めて簡潔でありながら広範な内容を網羅しており、英語だと丁寧に説明する必要がある興味深い例です。日本語の「ボーダーレス化」は、様々な無関係の事柄を「wrapping up together（まとめる）」という意味を明瞭かつ効果的に伝えている感じがしますが、英語には類似の表現がなさそうです。そのため、英訳するなら、
Borders between national territories were disappearing, distinctions between business sectors were becoming increasingly blurred, and there could no longer be any discrimination between the roles of men and women.
が適切でしょう。
「現地法人の自立化を促進するために」という一節の適訳は、
in an attempt to assist local corporations to stand on their own two feet
です。もう少し改まった感じにするなら、
in an attempt to assist local corporations to act more independently
でしょう。
「Z社は環境憲章の具体化に取り組んでいる。」という一文の適訳は、
Z-Company is taking concrete measures in line with its Environmental Charter.
です。この文は、日本語の「～化」に対して全く別の表現を使用した例であり、「具体化」に対して「practical applications」ではなく「concrete measures」を使用しています。文脈に応じて柔軟に対応することが望ましいということを示す一例です。
「Z部門とA会社他部門間シナジーの最大化ができる仕組みを意識した。」という一文を英訳するなら、
Consciousness was held of a setup which could maximize synergy between Z-Department and other divisions of A-company.
よりも、
A conscious effort was directed towards establishing a structure in which a maximum degree of synergy could be achieved between Z-Department and other divisions of A-company.
の方が適切です。
ちなみに、「期間収益を最大化」という一節の英訳としては、
maximize period income
よりも、
maximize income over specific periods
の方が自然です。
「生産工程での省エネルギー化などを推進する」という一節の英訳としては、
increase our levels of energy-saving production processes
よりも、
raise the level (あるいは「intensity」) of energy-saving measures within our production processes
の方が適切です。
「人材採用方法確定とそのスケジュール化」という一節の英訳としては、
deciding on methods of recruiting human resources and setting of schedule for such

deciding on methods of recruiting human resources and setting out an appropriate schedule for the purpose
の方が適切です。
「ミッション、ナレッジを細分化した各カンパニーはそれぞれプロフィットセンターをめざす。」という一文の英訳としては、

よりも、
Companies with individual missions clearly defined and high degrees of specialized knowledge will (あるいは「should」) each aim to become a profit center.
の方が良いでしょう。
「見える化」に相当する英語表現は、「measures to create transparency」です。文脈によっては、「clarity」と訳すのが良い場合もあります。
「初期化」に相当する英語表現としては、「initialization」が良いでしょう。その他の表現としては、「set values to zero」や「begin operations」などが挙げられます。
「真のグローバル企業への進化をめざす」という一節に対する適訳は、
aim to achieve further progress on the road towards being a truly global enterprise
です。
「Xのミキシング悪化を招いた」という一節を英訳するなら、
this resulted in a poor X mixture
ではなく、
this resulted in deterioration in the process of mixing X
です。
