発明が解決しようとする課題、あるいは発明の主要部はない。」という一文を英訳するなら、

There is no problem to be solved by the invention and the main part of the invention.

ではなく、

No problems that the invention purports to solve actually exist, nor are the main elements of an invention a reality.

が適切です。英語圏の人の大半は、最初の訳文の意味を理解するのに非常に苦労するでしょう。この例文で特筆すべき点は、「解決しようとする」に対する英訳の重要性です。その他の表現として、

No problems that the invention attempts to solve actually exist …
No problems that the invention tries to solve actually exist …

などもありますが、この例では、否定的な価値判断も下されているため、「purport to solve」と訳すのが最も適切です。「purport」の定義は、「appear to be or do, especially falsely (特に偽って、…であるように見せる、あるいは、…するように見せる)」であり、この例文において特許審査官が明確に意図しているのは、その出願が虚偽であるという見解を示すことです。良質な翻訳を生み出すためには、非常に高度な英語知識が求められます。「purport」は、翻訳者がもっと頻繁に使用して良い重要な単語です。
