140. 「示す」

日本語で広く使用されている「示す」ですが、多くの翻訳者に、「示す」も「立証する」も「解明する」もすべて「show」と訳してしまう傾向が見られます。このように何でも「show」と訳すのは、やや安易すぎます。「示す」の英訳としては、図で示す場合には「illustrate」、実験で示す場合には「demonstrate」、その他、「set out」や「reveal」が適切な場合もあります。

「L2で示す長さ」は、

length given (あるいは「shown」) by L2

ではなく、

length represented by L2」です。

「請求項2に示すように」は、

as shown in claim 2

ではなく、

as recited in claim 2

as revealed in claim 2

as demonstrated by claim 2

あるいは

as expressed in claim 2

です。

「矢印はYとZを示す」は、

the arrow shows Y and Z

ではなく、

the arrow denotes Y and Z

です。

「表1に実験結果の概要を示す。」という一文は、

A summary of experimental results is shown in Table 1.

と訳すよりも、

A summary of the results of the experiments appears in Table 1.

の方が良いでしょう。

「これを示す実用例を全く示すことなく」の英訳としては、

without showing any cited documents that show this

ではなく、

without revealing any cited documents that demonstrate this

または

without revealing any cited documents that prove this

が適切です。この例文で特筆すべき点は、「示す」という表現が2つの異なる英語の動詞に訳されていることです。

「制御装置を示す図」は、厳密に言えば、

a view showing a control device

ではなく、

a drawing of a control device

と訳すべきです。日本語の「図」に対して、英語の「view」や「drawing」などの語は、まさしく「show」の意味をすでに含んでいるので、原則として「show」を伴う必要がありません。ただし、強調することを意図して「a drawing illustrating a control device」と訳すのは問題ありません。

同様に、「穴をあける前の状態を示す図」は、

a view showing a condition before boring

ではなく、

a view illustrating a condition before the hole was bored

と訳すのが適切です。

「図2は本発明の動作説明フローチャート（全体）を示す。」という一文であれば、

Fig. 2 shows a flowchart explaining the operation (as a whole) of the present invention.

ではなく、

Fig. 2 constitutes a flowchart demonstrating an operation of the present invention (in its entirety).

です。
