128. 「確認する」と「チェックする」
「確認する」は、「see if」ではなく、「confirm (あるいは「check」) whether …or …」、「confirm that」、または「check to ensure that」です。「see if」を使うと、あまり乗り気でないという印象を与えてしまいます。
「本体がエラー状態になっていないか確認してください。」という一文を英訳するなら、
Check if any error occurs in the machine.
よりも、
Confirm (あるいは「Clarify」) whether or not any error has occurred in the machine.
の方が正確です。
「異常がないかを確認する」は、
confirm that there are no failures
ではなく、
confirm that no failures have occurred
または
confirm that there are no abnormalities
が好ましいでしょう。あるいは、93. 「日本語の否定間接疑問：『whether』の使用」で示したとおり、
clarify whether any abnormalities have occurred
と訳すことも可能です。ただし、「確認する」という動詞の訳語としては、「confirm」がおそらくベストでしょう。
「添付書類の不足がないかどうかや記入もれなどの内容に不備がないかを確認する」を英訳するなら、
check the documents received for incompleteness or insufficiency
よりも、
confirm that no attachments are missing, and that each document has been duly completed
の方がはるかに自然です。好ましさという点でやや劣るものの、
clarify whether or not any attachments are missing, and whether or not each document has been duly completed
でに良いでしょう。2番目の訳文は、単にチェックするだけでなく、確認すべきことを明瞭に英訳している点で、3番目の訳文よりも優れています。最初の訳文が抱える大きな問題は、「incompleteness」と「insufficiency」の意味が不明瞭なことです。
「検索記録によると、2001年1月頃から2007年3月頃までの運営が確認できる。」という一文を英訳するなら、
It may be confirmed that the shop had been operated between around January, 2001 and around March, 2007 according to the search records.
よりも、
From search records it was possible to confirm that the shop had been in business between around January 2001 and around March 2007.
の方が適切です。
「ガングリップのゆるみをチェックする」という一節を英訳する場合、取扱説明書であれば、
see if the gun grip is tightened enough
ではなく、
ensure that the gun grip is sufficiently tightened
とした方が良いでしょう。最初の訳文と修正後の訳文とでは、意味が大きく異なります。最初の訳文では、「see if」を使用したことにより、チェックした結果については重要ではないという印象を与えてしまう可能性があり、書き手の意図とは正反対の意味になってしまいます。取扱説明書の翻訳では、意図する内容が十分に読み手に伝わるように特に注意が必要です。
「ルノーとの試験合意条件に基づく試験後の性能確認」は、
post-test performance confirmation is based on the conditions of test agreement with Renault
ではなく、
should confirm that it satisfies the conditions stipulated in the agreement with Renault on performance subsequent to testing
とするか、もう少し簡潔に
should confirm that it satisfies the conditions stipulated in the agreement with Renault on post-testing performance
とすれば良いでしょう。
