92. 方法、システム、および技術と奪格
受動態の使用と密接に結びつくのが、英語における奪格の使用によって多くの日本人翻訳者が犯す問題です。
「Method」とは、方法ややり方という意味です。文法的には奪格で使用され、 人が何かを行う場合に使用する、あるいは人によって何かが行われる場合に使用される媒介物、器具、道具を表します。そのため、厳密に言えば、英語の「method」を文の主語(主格)として使うことはできません。
日本語とは異なるように思われる根本的な点として、英語では、人間または生物が動作を行うのが通例であり、論理の延長によってのみ、乗り物などの機械も動作を行います。この論理をさらに延長すると、コンピュータなどのシステム、ネットワークや各種手順も機能を実行し、結果を生成するという事実に至ります。しかし原則として、不自然な英文を避けるためには、できる限り文の主語を人間にし、機械や方法は人間が行う動作の道具として扱う方がはるかに良いでしょう。
「Aを削減できる方法」という一節を英訳するなら、
a method that can reduce A
ではなく、
a method according to which A can be reduced」
です。厳密に言えば、上記の例は、
use of this method (by human beings implied) can lead to significant reductions in A
と表現することもできます。すなわち、方法そのものではなく、人間が考案した「方法」というものを人間が使用することにより、Aを削減できるというわけです。
同様に、「この「表す」という用語の意味する技術的な事項が不明瞭である。」という一文なら、
Technical item that this term “represents” means is unclear.
よりも、
the technical item that is intended by use of the term “represents” is unclear.
の方が好ましい英文です。日本語では、「用語」が主語として使われていますが、英訳する場合には、奪格に変換する、つまり、「term」を人間が使用する道具として扱うのが自然です。
同様に、「災害時における社員の安全確保や、地域社会への協力を行う体制を構築した。」という一文を英訳するなら、
We have developed a system to protect all employees in the Group at the time of a disaster, and that also cooperates with local communities.
よりも、
We have developed a system (or “a structure”) that is designed to protect all employees in the Group at times of disaster, a system (or “a structure”) with which wo can also cooperate with local communities.
の方が適切です。セクション496でも説明していますが、「a system」を繰り返すのが、一文の中でまったく異なる2つの主語を伝えるための単純ながら効果的な方法です。英語では、システム、つまり構造物を、従属節の主語ではなく、グループが2つの異なる目的を達成するための道具とみなすことも重要です。
「正規の方法で製造された」という一節を英訳するなら、
manufactured with a normal method
ではなく、
manufactured according to an appropriate method
です。
「ECUの持ち方」は、
Holding Method of ECU
や
ECU holding method
ではなく、
Method of holding ECUs
です。
「Xを備える方法」は、
a method equipped with X
ではなく、
a method incorporating X
です。
「Equip」は通常、物理的な特性を有する物体と一緒にしか用いられないので、抽象概念の場合には、「incorporate」など別の動詞を使うのが適切です。
「データ配信システムにおいて… ことが記載されている。」という一文を英訳するなら、
There is a description of a data system wherein…
ではなく、
There is a description of a data system according to which…
です。
同様に、「耐腐食性が向上する技術を確立した。」という一文を英訳するなら、
technology has been developed according to which corrosion resistance can be enhanced.
が適切です。この文では、「technology」を、「method」と同じ範疇に属するものとみなすことができます。
「計算機内で質量分析器を模したモデルを用いた計算方法であるのかが明確ではない。」という一文を英訳するなら、
It is indefinite whether the inventions recited in these claims are inventions relating to a method for operating an actual mass analysis device, or a method for calculation using a model simulating a mass analyzer within a calculator.
よりも、
It is unclear whether the inventions recited in these claims are inventions relating to a method for operating an actual mass analysis device, or to a method of calculation in which a model is used for simulating a mass analyzer within a calculator.
の方が適切です。この例では、「a method of calculation according to which」よりも「a method of calculation in which」の方が好ましい表現です。「a model is used for simulating a mass analyzer within a calculator」という内容自体が方法であり、計算方法が使用される目的ではないからです。
「一方に折り曲げることにより露出される外部」という一節を英訳するなら、
a lid portion that covers the exposed sheets when it is bent to one side
よりも、
a lid portion that covers sheets that have been exposed by means of being bent to one side.
の方が適切です。これは、字面的な翻訳の方が好ましいという珍しい事例です。最初の訳文に見られる問題は、その行為が、実際には一般的なポイントが指摘されているにもかかわらず、特定の機会に限定されるという印象を与えてしまうということです。十分とは言えませんが、代替表現として、「a lid portion that, whenever it is bent to one side covers sheets that have been exposed.
を挙げることができます。
同様に、「蓋を閉めることにより、当該蓋の一部に用紙パッケージが押圧される。」という一文も、
when the lid is closed, the sheet package is pressed by part of the lid.
より、
as and when the lid is closed, the sheet package is pressed by part of the lid.
と訳した方が良いでしょう。これを
whenever the lid is closed, the sheet package is pressed by part of the lid.
と訳すことも可能で、もしかしたらその方が良いかもしれません。
「そのような構成は、X反射板にY反射板駆動装置を単に組み合わせることで反射板を相対変位させながら車両の衝突予測装置を検査する検査方法を単に羅列したものにすぎません。」という一文を英訳するなら、
This constitution is merely a list of the inspection method where the reflective panel Y is simply combined to the reflective panel X and in this state the vehicle collision predicting device is inspected as relatively displacing the reflective panel
よりも、
This configuration is nothing more than a recitation of an inspection method according to which the reflective panel driving device Y is simply combined with the reflective panel X and according to which, in this state, the vehicle collision forewarning device is inspected while the reflective panel is being relatively displaced.
の方がはるかに好適かつ正確です。最初の訳文には、文法的な間違いがあります。特に気になるのが、英語では、methodが「list」されることは通常なく、「explain」または「recite」されるものです。さらに、「as relatively displacing」という表現も不正確であり、一般的な英語圏の人には理解できないでしょう。この文は、受動態を使うのが便利かつ適切です。それよりも根本的な点として、英語で「combining A to B」と言うことはなく、「combining A with B」と言いますし、「a method where」とも言わず、「a method according to which」と言います。
