52. 「できなくなる」および「…になると考える」と、英語の間接話法における「could」および「would」の使用

「このような商品がEUで販売できなくなることは、消費者にとって不利益になると考えます。」という一文を英訳する場合、長い請願書という文脈であれば、

We feel that it will be detrimental to the consumers if these products can no longer be sold in the EU.

よりも、

We are also of the view that, if such products could no longer be sold within the European Union, consumers within the European Union would be put at a disadvantage.

の方がやや優れています。一次翻訳では「consumers」の前に「the」が使用されていましたが、これは明らかな間違いです。

また、間接話法中の「will be」は、「would be」に、「can」は「could」に置き換えなければ(『An A-Z of English Grammar and Usage』223ページ)、英文として理解不能です。

「不利益になる」は、様々な翻訳が考えられる曖昧な日本語表現です。「detrimental」が間違いというわけではありませんが、この曖昧な表現を最も的確かつ自然に翻訳する表現としては、「put at a disadvantage」がおそらくベストでしょう。
