の方がはるかに好適です。この文は、日本語の現在形を英訳するのに「it was duly confirmed」という過去時制の受動態を使用した例であり、主節よりも前に発生した事象を述べるのに「had indeed been abandoned」という大過去を使用した例でもあります。
