42. 日本語の現在時制:「will」と「should」の区別

子会社に配布する環境に優しい製品の証明に関する大手オートバイメーカーからの通達という文脈で、次のような一節が出てきました。

「第三者検証期間は、社内審議のプロセスおよびチェックシートの記載内容について相違がないかを、その元となった記録の確認やインタビューを通じて行い、結果をまとめた報告書を作成し、認定審議会事務局に提出する。認定事務局は製品技術委員会を開催する。」

この一節を翻訳するに当たって大事な点は、その詳細ではなく、当事者の立場と役割を理解することです。実際の一次翻訳は、

The third-party inspection organization checks the internal deliberation process and the submitted documents for appropriateness by inspecting the application and by interviewing the persons in charge. Then, it summarizes the results in the form of a report and submits it to the Secretariat of the Certification Council. The Secretariat convenes a Product Technology Subcommittee meeting.

でした。この書面は重要な社内文書であると考えられることから、当事者企業とは明確に切り離された「第三者調査機関」と、当時者企業の内部機関であり、指示の通達対象である事務局を始めとするその他の機関とを区別することが強く求められます。したがって、海外の子会社で働く外国人にも理解しやすい好適な翻訳は、

The third-party inspection organization will check the internal deliberation process and the appropriateness of the documents that have been submitted, by inspecting the veracity of the information supporting the application and by interviewing the persons in charge. The third-party inspection organization will then summarize the results in the form of a report and submit the report to the Secretariat of the Certification Council. といったところでしょう。1点だけ補足すると、「内容について相違ないか」を英訳するには、「veracity」という単語を使うのがベストです。

次の文は、本社が子会社に指示を出す場合には日本語の現在時制の取り扱いに常に注意が必要であり、翻訳者が各当事者のことを明確に理解し、区別する必要があることを示す好例です。

「本社は派遣元拠点に給与、経費、情報を展開する。派遣元拠点は、展開された情報に基づき、必要に応じて本国側との納税手続きなど、諸手続きを実施する。」

この文を英訳するなら、

翻訳する上で大事な点は言うまでもなく、下線で示した2つの句、すなわち本社が置かれている立場を正しく反映した語です。前者は「自身の仕事内容」であり、後者は「指示」です。

「神戸から東京への移動は新幹線を利用します。」という一文は、日本語では現在時制を使うものの、英語では未来時制が適切である簡潔な例です。そして同時に、文法的な主語が曖昧な和文の好例でもあります。適訳も簡潔で、

Transfer from Kobe to Tokyo will be on the Shinkansen.

でしょう。

同様に、「今回の海外の総括をZ会館で行います。」という1文も、

A round-up meeting of this conference will be held in the Z Conference Hall.

と訳すのが適切です。

日本人弁理士から米国の特許事務所に宛てられた手紙に出てくる

「Zについて米国特許法の要件を満たすように補正してください。」

という1文を英訳するなら、

As for Z, please amend them in a manner that satisfy the requirements provided in US Patent Act.
