406. 「otherwise」

「証明有無」に相当する英語表現は、

depending on presence of evidence

ではなく、

depend on the presence, or otherwise, of evidence

が適切です。「otherwise」は非常に便利でありながら、日本人翻訳者がなかなか使いこなせない英単語です。

「印刷装置は用紙の有無を検出する」という一節を英訳するなら、

the printing unit detects for presence/absence of the sheet

ではなく、

the printing unit examines whether or not a sheet is present

が適切です。

the printing unit examines whether a sheet is present or otherwise

も可ですが、本例に関しては、「whether or not」の方がはるかに好適でしょう。「otherwise」よりも平易で自然です。
