38. 日本語の現在時制:「努める(resolved)」、「していきます(strive)」、「させていただく(intend to)」、「取り組む(attempt to)」
「法的およびその他の要求事項を厳守し、環境保全の維持向上に努めます。」という一文の適訳は、
「We shall observe legal and other environment-related requirements to protect, maintain and upgrade the environment.」ではなく、
「We are resolved to observe strictly our legal obligations and other environment-related regulations, and thereby make our contribution to maintaining and enhancing protection of the environment.」です。
ここでの基本的なポイントは、企業としての正式な確約を表明するという文脈で「shall」や「requirements」などの単語を使用するのは何となく力強さに欠けるということと、宣伝目的の文書では、決意を強調し、法的およびその他の要求事項の性質を明示し、その意図と行動提案の詳細を明瞭に説明することが極めて好ましいことです。
「顧客の期待を超える製品を伝統と革新の技術で創造する」という一文を英訳するなら、
「We shall…」ではなく、
「We are resolved to create through both traditional and innovative technologies products that will exceed the expectations of our customers.」
の方が適切でしょう。
「弊社は事業活動を通じて国内と海外の食文化の結節点としての役割を果たしていきます。」という一文の英訳としては、
「We are endeavoring to serve as a pipeline between Japanese and foreign food cultures through business activities.」よりも、
「In the course of our business activities, we are resolved to play a role as an important link between Japanese and foreign food cultures.」の方が適切です。
最初の訳文が抱える大きな問題は、「we are endeavoring」という表現だと、努力はしたものの成功には至らなかったという印象を読者に与えてしまいかねないということです。
同様に、「we would like to」という表現を使うのも、力強さに欠け、誤解を招くおそれがあります。
例えば、「今週より、DJブランドの部品を販売させていただきます。」の適訳は、
「This spring, we would like to improve sales of DJ Brand components.」ではなく、
「This spring, we intend to embark on sales of DJ Brand components.」です。
これらの状況では、「we would like to」だと手ぬるい印象で、「we intend to」あるいは「we fully intend to」を使うことにより、入念に計画されたマーケティングキャンペーンに即した決意という印象が生まれます。この文は、翻訳者が、使用されている言葉の背後にある考えを考慮し、文章全体の文脈に合った翻訳を生み出す必要があることを表す別例です。
「私たちは、たゆみない研究開発で夢を追い求めていきます。」という一文の英訳としては、
「We are keeping ourselves in a continuing pursuit of our dreams through tireless Research and Development.」よりも、
「We are resolved to pursue our dreams with an unflagging commitment to Research and Development activities.」の方がはるかに自然です。
英語の「tireless」は通常、優れた努力を見せている人や大きな活力を持っている人を形容する場合に使用され、たゆみない活動や努力を形容する場合には、人を修飾する場合とは異なり、一般に「unflagging」が使用されます。
同様に、「省資源、排出物の減量化、環境負荷物質の削減・廃止に取り組みます。」という一文の英訳としては、
「We shall address …」のような物柔らかな表現よりも、
「We shall strive to achieve reductions in our use of resources, and reductions in volumes of waste materials and effluents that we produce; and we shall also seek to reduce, and eliminate entirely, the emission of materials that are detrimental to the environment.」の方が適切です。
スピーチにおける「社業ならびに業界の発展、さらに社会貢献ができるよう全身全霊を投入して取り組んで参ります。」という一文であれば、
「I fully intend to do everything that is within my power in order to make a meaningful contribution to the development of our Corporate activities, to our industry as a whole and, furthermore, to society at large.」あたりが適訳でしょう。
アンケートにおける「運動や食生活などの生活習慣を改善してみようと思いますか?」という質問に対する「すでに改善に6か月以上取り組んでいる。」という回答の英訳としては、
「I am already improving my lifestyle for more than 6 months.」よりも、
「I have already been attempting to improve my lifestyle for over six months.」の方が適切です。
