37. 日本語の現在時制:格言

次の一節は、T社の企業理念です。

「我が社は顧客奉仕に徹し、社員の人格・才能の向上と、福祉の増大を図り、企業の反映と環境保全活動を通じて社会に貢献する。」

この一節は、「貢献する」という動詞を英訳するのに英語の現在時制を使っても意味を成さないことを示す例です。妥当と言える翻訳案を挙げるなら、

「The maxims of our Company are to make the maximum efforts to serve our customers in a manner that gives satisfaction, to raise levels of both integrity and skills among our employees, to seek to enhance both the quantity and the quality of our welfare facilities, and to make a contribution to society, not only by virtue of creating an enterprise that is prosperous, but also by means of activities designed to protect the environment.」

といったところでしょう。どんな訳語を選ぶにしても、企業の意思と決意を伝えることが不可欠であり、「the company is making a contribution」という言い方は何としても避けるべきです。現在進行形を使ってしまったら、このような気持ちを企業理念に込めるという目的が果たせないからです。
