237. 名詞を分類するフレーズと形容詞の位置: 特殊な例「the kind of … that」

「the kind of」、「the sort of」、「the type of」など、名詞を分類するフレーズにも後置修飾が使われます。

「私たちが考える『美』とは、うわべだけの見せかけの美ではありません。」という一文を英訳するなら、

Our own idea of beauty is not the kind (あるいは「type」、「sort」) of beauty that is just superficial and skin-deep.

が適切です。

 

「…は次のような個性を有する」という一節であれば、

… feature in having following configuration

ではなく、

… have configuration of the kind described below

が適切です。この例で、「kind」の後に「that is」を入れる必要はなく、省略した方が自然です。

 

「また、時々、登山でもそこに頂上が見えているのに引き返さなければならないというような見極めが必要です。」という一文を英訳するなら、

On occasions decisions may need to be taken of a kind that necessitates beating a retreat, even in circumstances where the summit of a mountain that is being climbed is in sight.

とするか、原文の「ような」を訳出しないで、もう少し簡潔に

On occasions decisions may need to be taken to beat a retreat, even in circumstances where the summit of a mountain that is being climbed is in sight.

とすれば良いでしょう。また、「引き返す」の意味合いを効果的かつ自然に伝える表現としては、「beat a retreat」がおそらく最良でしょう。

 

「すべてを包み込む（ような）やさしさ」という一節を英訳するなら、

kindness enclosing all things

よりも、

kindness of a kind that embraces all things

の方が適切です。この一節は、セクション238から259で取り上げる用法の好例であり、セクション236で取り上げた用例にも似ています。
