「over」の用例については、セクション315でも取り上げています。

「回転全域で」に相当する英語表現は、「over the entire area of rotation」です。「covering」、「everywhere on」、「everywhere in」を意味する「over」は、便利でありながら、日本人翻訳者がなかなか使いこなせない前置詞です。

「対象商品全体においても」に相当する英語表現も同様で、

over the entire range of products concerned

が適切です。

「従来の方法では1ステージ100トンが5ステージなら合計活力は500トンです。」という一文を英訳するなら、

In a conventional technique the total pressure force is 500 tons when a 100-ton pressure force is applied sequentially to the individual 5 stages.

よりも、

With a conventional technique the pressure force amounts to 500 tons when a 100-ton pressure force is applied sequentially over five individual stages.

の方が好ましいでしょう。

「すべての製品に対し幅広く、また新設立回からアフターサービスに至る長期にわたり」という一節なら、

over the entire range of our products, and over very long periods of time, starting from attendance at times of new installations and continuing right up to the stage of after-sales service

が適訳です。

「over」は、「時」の表現にも使われます。「これまで長年にわたりご指導いただいた先輩」という一節を英訳するなら、

I have learned much from more experienced workers for years

よりも、

senior colleagues from whom I have received guidance over the years

の方が適切です。好ましさという点でやや劣るものの、

senior colleagues from whom I have received guidance for many years

でも良いでしょう。

「ここ10年の間」なら「over the past ten years」です。
