202. 「パーツ」

英語の「part」や「parts」を日本語の「パーツ」と訳す場合には特に注意が必要です。中部地方では、多くの人々がパーツの製造あるいは販売で生計を立てています。「パーツ」は今や極めて重要な日本語なのですが、日本人翻訳者の多くは、英語の「part」が本来表す意味が「部品」ではなく「部分」であるということを見過ごしがちです。そのために、「part」を使うとどうしても曖昧な表現になってしまうことがあります。

例えば、「part change」、「part damage」、「part design」、「part name」、「part number」、「parts expert」、「parts adviser」、「part supplier」などは、翻訳者が見過ごしがちな曖昧な表現です。これらの表現は、「supplier of parts」、「number of part」、「name of part」、「design of parts」、「damage to parts」、「change in part」など、「of」や「to」、「in」などの前置詞を加えるのが好ましいでしょう。

「部品箱」に相当する英語表現は、「part box」ではなく、「box of parts」です。

「対策内容：形状を変更し、見栄えが悪くなる部分は他部品でカバーする。」に相当する英語表現は、

Corrective action: In case of any part of which visual quality becomes unattractive, change its configuration and cover it by other parts.

ではなく、

です。最初の訳文は、書き手が言及しているのが「部分」なのか、「部品」なのか、読み手には理解できない極端な例です。
