よりも、

または

items such as the mechanism used for supplying ink can be dispensed with

の方が好ましいでしょう。

「Xができる時間を省略する」という一節であれば、

save (あるいは「eliminate」) the time required to do X

と訳すのが適切です。この例文の場合、「save」と「eliminate」は同じ意味ですが、「save」の方がややくだけた響きで自然な表現です。
