298. 前置詞: スタイル、文法、反復
前置詞を反復することによって文体の洗練度が向上し、曖昧性が解消されることは少なくありませんが、特殊な例を1つ紹介します。
「形成品で…低額、高品質、短納期で作る」という一節を英訳するなら、
the plastic products can be made at a good price, good quality and short delivery time
ではなく、
the plastic products can be made at a good price, of a good quality and with a short delivery time
が適切です。「make」の後に置く3つの前置詞がいずれも異なるので、「of」と「with」とを省略した最初の英訳は文法的に正しくありません。つまりこの例では、異なる前置詞を使うことが、文体上望ましいだけではなく、文法的に欠かせないということです。
「より安全で高品質な製品をお届けできるように努める」という一節の適訳は、
make efforts to provide our valued customers with products that are even more safe to use, and of a quality that is higher than ever
です。「of a quality」は省略しないで表すと「products that are of a quality」であり、「of a quality」の前置詞「of」が重要なポイントです。従属節内において、前置詞を必要とする句と必要としない句とがある場合や、異なる前置詞を用いる必要がある場合に、日本人翻訳者は苦戦を強いられることが珍しくありません。この一節は比較的わかりやすい例と言えるでしょう。
その他、強調感を出したり明瞭性を高めたりするうえでも、前置詞の反復は重要です。
「その結果、トヨタ自動車を始めとする得意先やその協力会社、および当社協力会社さらに同業他社からの多大な支援により、12月15日からX部品の代替生産が開始された。」という一文を英訳するなら、
As a result, thanks to an enormous amount of support received from customers including the Toyota Motor Corporation, from companies that had signed collaboration agreements with Toyota and with other valued customers, from companies in regular collaboration agreements with this company (あるいは「Z-company」), and from a host of other companies in the same industry, stopgap production of X components was commenced on 15 December.
が適切です。この例では前置詞「from」を4回繰り返すのが重要です。スピーチの場合でも、この「from」の反復によって、言及した企業の一社一社から受けた支援をZ社が重視していることをきちんと強調できます。
「復旧に支援していただいた企業や、関係する官公庁、団体に配布した。」というシンプルな一文なら、
Copies were distributed to companies that had assisted Z-Company in their restoration of production, to various Ministries and Agencies concerned, and to other interested organizations.
と訳すのが適切です。この例文では、明瞭性とスタイルという観点、および各関係企業による支援に対して感謝の意を強調するという目的で前置詞「to」を反復することが重要です。
「ネジ部の強度不足のために部品が正規の状態に固定されなくなり、ECUが動作しなくなったり、異音の発生などにつながります。」という一文ならば、
In addition, due to lack of strength of screw connection, parts may not be correctly fixed, or malfunction or abnormal noise may be caused.
よりも、
Further, inadequate screw connections may result in parts not being correctly fixed, in the ECU malfunctioning and in abnormal noise being caused.
の方が英訳として適切です。この例文では、前置詞「in」の反復が重要です。
同様に、「工具や車両他部品との衝突により、コネクタの嵌合不良、ダイアグの発生やECU機能が正しく働かなくなるおそれがあります。」という一文を英訳するなら、
Collision with tools or vehicle and other parts may cause diagnosis to occur or ECU function may fail.
よりも、
There is a danger that collisions with tools, or with other vehicle components, may result in a failure to fit the connector, in the occurrence of diagnosis or in a failure of the ECU to function correctly.
の方がはるかに良いでしょう。
「当社は急速に変化する未来へ向けて、伝統に培われた技術力、蓄積されたノウハウ、時代に即応したハイテクノロジーを駆使し、エネルギーや環境問題といった新しい分野に応用、さらなる飛躍を期しています。」という一文を英訳するなら、
Against a background of rapid change, we are now aiming for further expansion in the future, by skillful use of technologies that we have developed over the years, by taking advantage of know-how that we have acquired in the process of doing so, and by the utilization of advanced technologies that conform to the requirements of the present day, and we also intend to apply such technologies in new areas such as energy and environment-related issues.
が適切です。自然な英訳にするためのポイントは、前置詞「by」の反復です。そして、スタイルおよび自然な翻訳という観点から、「駆使し」に対してそれぞれ多少異なる3つの表現を使用している点も特筆に値します。
「次々に開発される新素材をより速く、より美しく、経済的に切断するのこぎりをお届けするために」という一節も同様で、
with the aim of delivering to its customers a range of new materials that are likely to be developed one after the other, and of delivering saws that are capable of cutting such materials ever more quickly, ever more attractively and ever more economically
が適訳です。この例文の場合、繰り返すのは副詞ですが、英文のスタイルを整えるという点で、前置詞を繰り返す場合と同じ効果があります。この例では、2つ目、3つ目の「ever more」を省略すると、どうしてもやや曖昧な表現になってしまいます。
「T社は、切断品質、コスト、生産性など、カッティングワークを取り巻く高度な要望にお応えしています。」という一文を英訳するなら、
T-company is constantly responding to the highly demanding requirements of its customers in respect of cutting work, for example, in terms of quality in cutting, in terms of costs and in terms of productivity.
が適切です。この例では、「in terms of」の繰り返しが非常に有効です。
