361. 限定と制限

「ドライバーがXの溝に入ったのを確認して、ゆっくり回してください。ある範囲の角度までしか回りませんので、力ずく回さないでください。」という一文の適訳は

「Make sure that a screwdriver is put into the slit on X and turn it slowly. Do not turn the screwdriver forcibly since the degree of the angle around which the screwdriver can be turned is limited.

です。後半をもう少しくだけた感じにするなら、

Do not turn the screwdriver forcibly since the extent to which the angle can be turned is limited.

です。

「Xの平坦部はリード角が0であることに限らず」という一節を英訳するなら、

the flat portion of X is not limited to that the lead angle is 0

です。

the flat portion of X need not be limited to one in which the lead angle is zero

とすれば文法的に正しく、さらに良いでしょう。

「…に限定されない」に相当する英語表現は、「is not restricted to …」ではなく、「need not be restricted …」です。

「AとBを測定することが限定されている」という一節を英訳するなら、

it is restricted to measure

という表現ではなく、

a limitation is placed on measuring A and B

が適切です。

「Xの形式は特に限定されるものではない」という一節を正しく英訳するなら、

the shape of X may not be limited specifically

ではなく、

the shape of X need not be specifically limited

です。最初の訳文は「限定してはいけない」という意味になってしまっており、完全に間違いです。「特に限定する必要性はない」という意味を伝える2番目の訳文は妥当です。

「損なわない限り特に限定はなく」という一節も同様で、

is not particularly

という表現ではなく、

as long as no damage is caused, X need not be restricted

と訳すのが適切でしょう。
