304. 前置詞: 正確に詳述する必要性; 「for」

「内部の用紙が覆われて保護される」という一節も曖昧になりかねない例です。前節では「to」を取り上げましたが、こちらは「for」がキーワードです。この一節を、

the sheets inside are covered for protection

と英訳しても、文法的には問題ありませんが、覆われた用紙が結果的に保護されるのかどうかという点が明らかになっておらず、セクション303の「安全防災方針」と同様の疑問が残ります。曖昧性を回避するためには、

the sheets that are on the inside are covered and thus protected

と明確に表現するのが圧倒的に好ましいでしょう。

「蓋体上面は主要部を覆う大きさで」という一節も同様で、

the lid body top face has a size for covering the storage portion

よりも、

the lid body top face is of a size that can cover the storage portion

の方が適切です。

「注意点」に相当する英語表現は、「points for special attention」または「points requiring special attention」が良いでしょう。「precautions that need to be taken」と訳すのが適切な場合もあります。

「発振されるためのファイバーの長さが必要」に相当する英語表現は、

a fiber length enough for oscillation

ではなく、

a fiber of a length that is adequate for the purposes of oscillation

です。

「コンテンツリスト要求」に相当する英語表現は、「contents list request」ではなく、「request for a contents list」で、「request for a list of contents」だとさらに自然です。
